Curator: Aimee Muscoe
Name & Link to Tech Tool or Tool homepage: Lines of Symmetry
Brief Description of Tech Tool: Students click on shapes to answer questions about lines of symmetry.
Technical & Cost considerations: This is a free game. It requires the use of Adobe Flash Player and it could be used with a smart board.
Evaluation
Description of Learning Activity:
Students can practice identifying lines of symmetry
1. Learning Activity Types
-practice for fluency
2. What mathematics is being learned?
NCTM Standards
-Geometry
-analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three- dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships
Proficiency Strands
How is the mathematics represented?
The mathematics are represented in a virtual manipulative. One disadvantage of this tool is that students do not need to draw the lines of symmetry, just identify what shapes have a particular number of lines of symmetry. Another disadvantage is that there are a limited number of shapes represented.
4. What role does technology play?
The technology allows students to see the lines of symmetry for a variety of shapes
Affordances of Technology for Supporting Learning
5. How does the technology fit or interact with the social context of learning?
This tool is meant for individual use.
6. What do teachers and learners need to know?
Students need to know what a line of symmetry is. This tool is easy to use and no special technological knowledge is necessary to use it.
